On this site, I am sharing my story of finding out my Viking heritage and other Viking experiences and information. You are also welcome to visit my Etsy store with my Viking designs.
THE CALLING
Moving back to Denmark from Australia, where I grew up, was a very difficult decision. It broke our family and my heart. It tested my strength. But then I found out I was a Viking by direct heritage and things started to add up. I started to understand why I was a fighter and survivor.
THE VOLDSTED AND THE VIKING PRINCESS
My mother was researching our heritage and found out that our ancestors once owned a castle, where a Rune stone was found and is still standing near Viborg, Denmark. It is still in great condition and can be visited to this day with the Voldsted right next to it. A voldsted is a Viking borg, it is a type of circular fort, built in Scandinavia during the Viking Age. So, my mother continued her research and found out, that we are direct “descendants” of Harald Bluetooth, Gorm the old and Ragnar Lodbrok ! (* I am aware that the lineage may not be pure and that some lineages may not be as we know of today. – We may never really know and the lineage can be really hard to prove the further back we go). My partner suggested to watch Vikings. And I did, going through my breastcancer treatment. I started hoping that my courage was inherited from Lagretha ( the character married to Ragnar), only to find out through further research that my 38 th great grandma was infact Aslaug ( the second wife of Ragnar, in Vikings – **the storyline in the series is a bit muddled up, to please the audience).
The Voldsted And Rune Stone
The round circle of shrubs, in third picture is our ringborg/volsted/trelleborg. Translation of the stone into english, will be coming soon.
BORK VIKINGHAVN – DENMARK
Bork vikinghavn is a live museum, where one can experience todays, Vikings living there in the warmer months. To visit Bork vikinghavn is to walk among the Vikings and experience everyday life of a Viking, or even live there as a Viking. In August, there is a market, where Vikings from across Scandinavia come and sell their handmade Viking crafts. So far, I have experienced everything from fine silver thread being sewn into traditional clothing, sword making, food, mjød (Beverage brewed on honey, water, and yeast), tattoo artistry, shield making, fight training, jewelry making, games and so much more. And if you’re lucky you can also experience a raid and fight. Ceremonies are sacred, and only for Asa and nordic god believing vikings. Asa is a more modern word for the viking beliefs.
Holger den danske / Holger The Dane
Holger The Dane sits in Skjern, it is said that if a war comes, he will wake up and protect us. This is a replica though. Another replica can be seen at Helsingeborg Castle, on Sjælland. The true Holger The Dane Bronze statue, has been locked away for nearly 38 years in Kronborg Castles basement.
